Tasting Notes:
The Alta Tierra, literally high soil, is the best of the best from our hillside vineyard. Alta Tierra will be bottled only in the best vintages and from the best wines of that vintage. Our 2002 Napa Valley Alta Tierra is the second release of what we feel is a very delicious and complex wine. The blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot shows all the high lights of the 2002 vintage.
The 2002 vintage was a very good grape growing season. Early spring rain and mild weather gave way to an exceptionally balanced summer, with Napa Valley’s signature warm days and cool nights. August weather cooled slightly, allowing for longer hang time. The wines of this vintage reflect the ideal ripeness for our vineyard.
The 2002 Alta Tierra is deep ruby in color with ripe aromas of black cherry and plum. French oak imparts a subtle caramel characteristic, complimenting the blueberry flavors. The finish lingers with hints of chocolate and tobacco. Longer bottle aging creates subtle balanced tannins. Youthful and friendly now, this wine should continue to develop beautifully for 10 to 15 years.
